§ July 1st, 2011 § Filed under Casual Style, Meredith's Looks § Tagged , , § 9 Comments

Cubicle Chic is about dressing for the workplace, but a young professional’s life is about more than just the 9-5 world – we’ve still got our evenings and weekends to dress for! With Cubicle Goes Casual, we’ll share some of our favorite casual looks so you can see the flip side of our sartorial lives.

Polka dot shoes

This is the best and the worst kind of Friday. The Friday before a long weekend. You are so excited to finish up your day and hop in the car/bus/train to your weekend plans, but then it is the looooooooooongest day ever. Is it really still 10:30am?

My outfit is a little festive tribute to the 4th. I found this top at Forever 21 recently, and I think the stripes go well with the polka dot shoes. These darlings don’t get out much, though. They are they kind of flats that aren’t forgiving in the least, and your feet are dying at the end of the day. Lucky for them, they’re cute.

Enjoy your holiday, and we’ll see you back here on Tuesday for next week’s WYCC!

It’s Friday! Time to finish up the week’s projects and get out of town. Besides the freak hailstorm we had last week, NYC has been blessed with some beautiful June days this year, so walks through the city, outdoor happy hours and visits to the waterfront have been plentiful. And while I love New York in the summer, it’s also nice to escape for a day or two for a more relaxed day in the sun.

I consider myself lucky that one of my best friends lives in Long Island, so these shots were taken when I visited her recently for a chill Saturday in the suburbs. I’m headed back tonight with a voyage out to Montauk planned for tomorrow. I’ve never been to the Hamptons, so it’s time to learn what all of the fuss is about. I’ll be sharing my Hamptons look with you soon! I’m thinking that preppy is my only option.

But what is this I hear about everyone heading to Rockaway Beach this summer? The Times says the Hamptons have lost their cool, so I’m thinking A-train to Rockaway next weekend, and leave the prep at home.

Cubicle Goes Casual: Punky $10 Million Pooh Bear

Big Yellow Bear

The first time I encountered this big yellow bear was during a lunchtime trip to my favorite salad joint, Just Salad. He lives on Park Avenue and 54th street in front of the Seagram’s building, under his large, ominous, perpetually lit lamp. Whenever I pass him, I’m reminded of Winne-the-Pooh: both are big yellow bears! At first glance, he brought a smile to my face, but after just a short gaze, you’ll realize he’s not all smiles and rainbows. His melancholy is just part of his charm! I looked up the artist online – this guy will cost you about $10 million. …More expensive than your average bear :)

Yesterday, I figured it would be the perfect backdrop for my new punky party dress. I picked this one up on a jaunt to St. Mark’s place while my brother was in town celebrating his twenty-first birthday. After slipping it on, both Meredith and I realized that it looks like it could fit into one of our favorite blogger’s – Gala Darling’s – wardrobe. She’s got the pretty/punk thing down pat. The tulle makes it endlessly fun to wear and strut around in – and the pattern makes it different from the average LBD.

I can’t wait to wear this to a summer party or out dancing :) Who else has a new party dress you can’t wait to wear? Do tell. HAPPY FRIDAY!!

Cubicle Goes Casual: A Walk in the Woods

Don’t you just love the green in these photos? You almost wouldn’t know they were taken in the middle of New York City. I live near a small park in the East Village, but it’s large enough to allow you a moment of peace and quiet. It may be the presence of the Quaker Meeting House that helps maintain this vibe, but whatever it is, the park is the perfect place for taking outfit pictures (Claire of De Lune uses it too!) or just sit and read on a Sunday afternoon.

As for the outfit, this is a new tank from Forever21 I picked up last week as the temperature was rising. I realized that my summer casual wardrobe is horribly lacking, which is probably due to the fact that I’m always trying to find pieces that I could wear to work. Instead, I needed to go shopping without keeping the office in mind, and this was one of my inexpensive buys. It’s comfortable, cool, and I’m sure I’ll get a lot of use out of it this season.

And I’ll leave you with a question this Friday: shorts – love ‘em or hate ‘em? I’m pretty sure I haven’t purchased any shorts since high school, and whenever I see them in stores, I never feel compelled to try them on and buy a pair. However, I could get behind a pair of these.

Cubicle Goes Casual: Confetti Top

NYC Taxi

Last time I wore this top on Cubicle Chic, it was for an office look and I called it the  giraffe top because, as part of that combination, it looked vaguely like an animal print. It’s awesome how certain garments morph when you pair them with two entirely different ensembles. I stuck with black again, but this is far from a corporate look. To me, it’s very Brooklyn casual – perfect for our friend Melissa’s wine and cheese tasting at her adorable Brooklyn Heights abode a couple of weekends ago (which, by the way, was ah-mazing!). The degree of matchy-matchiness was somewhat of an unexpected side effect… I’ve been wearing these booties quite a bit lately, so I was pleased to see that, after throwing them on per the usual routine, they matched the shirt astoundingly well.

You know what I absolutely love? Dressy tee shirts. First and foremost, they’re comfy, they make for great layering pieces (ie this piece will take me into the fall) and some can be worn in both casual and corporate wardrobes. Do any of you have a favorite dressy tee? We want the deets. HAPPY FRIDAY!!
