Happy Memorial Day!

Memorial Day 2011

We hope you enjoy your delicious BBQs and sunshine! We’re spending our day off working on a guest lecture for an entrepreneurship-oriented NYC public school class (this Tuesday – post to come on Wednesday!) about dressing professionally for summer jobs and internships. We are SO EXCITED about this and can’t wait to share it with you.

Cubicle Goes Casual: To the Rock Show!

§ May 27th, 2011 § Filed under Casual Style, Lindsay's Looks § Tagged , , , § 17 Comments

Cubicle Chic is about dressing for the workplace, but a young professional’s life is about more than just the 9-5 world – we’ve still got our evenings and weekends to dress for! With Cubicle Goes Casual, we’ll share some of our favorite casual looks so you can see the flip side of our sartorial lives.

Leather Corset Dress

I have always wanted to own something leather – a garment, not an accessory. About a month ago, after years of lusting for leather jackets, vests, even shorts, I finally made it happen. This dress went on sale on Gilt.com promptly at noon. In case you’re not familiar with the way Gilt works, the most sought after items are gone within SECONDS of the sale’s launch. When my size was still in stock at 12:01 p.m., I knew it was meant to be. The corset top feels bespoke, and the lingerie cut is just the right amount of sexy. The bottom, made of “sweatshirt material,” flares out more than I expected, but the contrast of the tight leather bustier gives it a mod-ish silhouette. It packs quite a style punch, and it’s one of the most comfortable dresses I own, no joke.

If I can get out of work on time, I’m planning on wearing it to my friend Buddy’s show at Rockwood Music Hall tonight. If you’re in the NYC area and you like acoustic/soul singer songwriter music, I highly recommend you stop by! I think it’s the quintessential concert dress. Do you have a go-to concert outfit? Does what you wear depend on who you’re going to see?

A Wedding Weekend

Can you guess what I was up to last weekend? My good friends were married in Connecticut, and I was one of the seven golden bridesmaids to process down the aisle. This was my first experience as a member of a wedding party, and it was so much fun! The bachelorette party and bridal shower were great, but the wedding was definitely the cherry on top. It’s such an honor to be able to participate in a friend’s wedding, and this one’s responsibilities included everything from performing a choreographed dance to stealing the groom’s shoes (Curious, aren’t you? Ask, and I will share!).

There were three wardrobe changes throughout the weekend, a fact that pleases style bloggers such as myself to no end. I wore this sari on Friday night for our performance, and then the above outfit was my bridesmaids attire for the wedding ceremony. Quite comfortable (and rather generous in the bust… I’m not complaining!), I think we looked elegant processing down the aisle.

The below outfit was for the wedding reception and fantastic dance party. I found it while rummaging through the Buffalo Exchange in the East Village the weekend before the wedding. I hadn’t had any luck the previous few weeks in my browsing and had reached the end of my rope: it was the Buffalo Exchange for the win or I’d be borrowing something from my roommate. So it was fate when this blue and green gem revealed itself and was my size! I’m usually not a fan of bubble shaped skirts, but this one was structured enough so that it didn’t hug in all the wrong places, it wasn’t constricting, and it created a flattering silhouette. I couldn’t say no.

The only challenge with strapless dresses: keeping the dress up. This one actually worked very well, even with plenty of dancing over the course of the evening. I went with safety pinning the dress to my strapless bra, but I am thinking of testing out fashion tape next time. Would anyone recommend giving it a try?

Cubicle Goes Casual: Kickin’ It

Badass. That’s how I feel in these boots. I walk down the street with deep, hallow, echoing footsteps, and people know I mean business. At least, that’s how I’m imagining it in my head: lone cowgirl roaming the streets of NYC who you better not cross, or else…

So when I once read on a fashion blog that cowboy boots are unflattering because they cut off your legs mid-calf, I was like: is this girl crazy? They are AWESOME. Personal style is about feeling good about yourself, and I feel like I own the place when in these.

I wore this outfit to a friend’s wine tasting last Saturday and was going for something simple and also interesting. My go-to solution in this situation is essentially a black uniform with pops of color. The lace top added a little texture, and then I added my kickin’ boots, my favorite green jacket and earrings, and a purple bracelet. I just love me my dark and jewel tone colors!

Wearing these earrings also reminded me how much I miss jewelry making. It has been a hobby and occasional side business since I was a kid, but blogging has become my main creative outlet, and jewelry has lost its priority. However, the few times that I’ve sat down to design something over the past couple of months, I’ve remembered how fulfilling and often therapeutic it is to create – to become totally engrossed in a project and have the satisfaction of producing a final product. I hope to have more time this summer to devote to earring and necklace making, so are there any requests?

Cubicle Goes To Cocktails

Black Dress

I don’t think the fact that spring has sprung is news to anyone, especially those of you who live in the Northeast! It has been so beautiful lately that being chained to the desk is more difficult than usual. Perhaps this is why both halves of Cubicle Chic have been booking up our social calendars as of late: we can’t stand to be cooped up inside for any longer than is required of us.

This particular outfit brings me back! My dad bought it for me to wear to my (NERD ALERT) induction into the National Honor Society at Guilford High School. Ha. It’s a good thing he is such a classic fellow — this dress will never go out of style, which is what I love most about it. The dress is also so incredibly comfortable and versatile. I wore it on Cubicle Chic this winter with a leopard cardigan, which made it feel much sassier than this jacket does. In fact, that outfit was probably cocktail ready without any changes!

While I think it’s perfectly fine to continue wearing what you wore to work for after hours events, it can be fun to spice things up! With the warmer weather, it’s fun to flaunt :) . I’ve put together a pictorial guide below on how to go from savvy to sexy in a few easy steps that don’t require re-applying makeup, perfume, or even changing shoes. The key is to layer during the day so you can de-layer for the evening. Do you have any special tricks to prepare for evening events directly after work?
