After a two week break, Cubicle Chic is back! Did you miss us? Have you been enjoying the summer? This week was something else – the heat in New York has been absolutely unbearable, making the morning commute the most dreaded part of the day. I saw my good friend Rachel this weekend, and the two of us got to talking about how ladies have it so much easier in weather like this, and we feel pretty awful for men who have to don suits everyday! Wearing these trousers was hard enough (even sans sweater during the morning commute)… I don’t know how they do it! Thankfully, sleeveless tops, open-toed shoes and flowy skirts are an option for Meredith and I!
This outfit is definitely one that I save for the summer months, mainly because it feels too casual for our office’s formal fall/winter dress code. The top tends to feel a bit festive, so I dressed it down with the white cardigan (black would have been too much) and gray trousers. I do quite like the black – white – gray combination. Stay cool!!

We like love you. Like us back??

Union Square will always be one of my favorite places in the city. I spent my first two years of college at NYU living right on the square, first at University Hall and then at Carlyle Court. It was central to many of my New York firsts, including eating my first hot dog from a cart
. To me, the square is a home away from home – I get that familiar comfortable feeling whenever I pass through, regardless of how crowded and hectic it can be.
So I was at ease when Meredith and I opted to take photos near the old train station on the square. While the ensemble is on the casual side, it was perfect for the occasion. I was comfortable both on my own two feet and in the environment. In adulthood, that doesn’t seem to happen often enough! We’re always pushing our boundaries, moving somewhere new (especially us New Yorkers) and, well, wearing new clothes. It was nice to feel that relaxed for a change. Do you have an outfit or favorite place that puts you at ease?

I’ve been really feeling low on outfits these days. But just when I think I have to go out and do the unthinkable – SPEND MONEY on clothes – I put together a new combination that pushes back the shopping trip. When I dreamed this one up, I wasn’t 100% certain it would work. Both the blazer and the trousers are quite suity AND quite different in color and pattern, so I was hesitant to wear them together… but thankfully I tried! I think wearing gray shoes helps balance the bottom half, and the funky mustard blouse complements the navy in a way that allows it to coexist with the slacks. Crafty, no?
On a slightly funnier note, this photoshoot occurred on the same day I injured my foot. How? I was running a half marathon, about to cross the finish line and my ankle gave way. Hahaha, NOT. The real story: I was running in heels down the hall and my left ankle rotated, forcing my shoe off and bending my toes in all the wrong ways during the process. Embarrassing. Of course, that day I thought I would “walk it off” which included taking these photos in the same heels, but my foot was red, swollen and bruised the next morning. Wrong decision. I’ve been wearing flats to the office for a couple of weeks now… and can I be honest? I hate it. It’s the worst. I can’t wait to get my tootsies back in stilettos (I’ll walk slowly, of course). Until then, please enjoy the last photo in the series: an extremely awkward attempt at being cute with a gimpy left foot. Anyone else care to share their unfortunate experiences involving heels?

Cubicle Chic is about dressing for the workplace, but a young professional’s life is about more than just the 9-5 world – we’ve still got our evenings and weekends to dress for! With Cubicle Goes Casual, we’ll share some of our favorite casual looks so you can see the flip side of our sartorial lives.

The first time I encountered this big yellow bear was during a lunchtime trip to my favorite salad joint, Just Salad. He lives on Park Avenue and 54th street in front of the Seagram’s building, under his large, ominous, perpetually lit lamp. Whenever I pass him, I’m reminded of Winne-the-Pooh: both are big yellow bears! At first glance, he brought a smile to my face, but after just a short gaze, you’ll realize he’s not all smiles and rainbows. His melancholy is just part of his charm! I looked up the artist online – this guy will cost you about $10 million. …More expensive than your average bear
Yesterday, I figured it would be the perfect backdrop for my new punky party dress. I picked this one up on a jaunt to St. Mark’s place while my brother was in town celebrating his twenty-first birthday. After slipping it on, both Meredith and I realized that it looks like it could fit into one of our favorite blogger’s – Gala Darling’s – wardrobe. She’s got the pretty/punk thing down pat. The tulle makes it endlessly fun to wear and strut around in – and the pattern makes it different from the average LBD.
I can’t wait to wear this to a summer party or out dancing
Who else has a new party dress you can’t wait to wear? Do tell. HAPPY FRIDAY!!

I am not one of those people who will wear something once and never wear it again. No sir. In fact, after I started blogging, I found that I had an “excuse” to wear some of the items in my closet that otherwise don’t get to see the light of day. Why? When reaching for them, I felt like they were too… dressy, punky, revealing, or fell under some other sartorially extreme category that would prevent me from wearing them out. Thankfully, I’ve scrapped the notion of saving clothes for special occasions: if you love something, wear it! If you feel good in it, everything else will fall into place. I have a similar mindset for wearing garments more than once. You love it? Wear it! Who cares if you wore it last week? I personally love the challenge of finding different ways to incorporate my favorite garments or accessories into my ensembles. It keeps the creative juices flowing
That said, this cardigan has been featured on Cubicle Chic quite a bit. I can’t get enough of it! I love how it breaks up the solids in this ensemble – I’ve included some pictures with and without it to show the contrast. Do you have any garments you’re currently wearing to shreds?
